AmazonBasics is a newly released brand that offers quality products at affordable prices. They make other similar products like the AmazonBasics Pillow, which has 500 positive reviews and four stars out of 5 on Amazon. The packing cube set comes in many colors, perfect for travel. It’s also an excellent gift idea.
When it comes to purchasing the best travel accessories, a few companies are worth investing in. But what if you didn’t have to spend a fortune on high-quality travel gear? AmazonBasics has certainly addressed that topic, with a set of four packing cubes costing roughly $20. We’ve put them through the wringer on visits to over twenty countries over the previous two years, and we’ve known them quite well. Can these less-priced packing cubes compete with the more expensive brands? Let’s have a look.
AmazonBasics Packing Cubes in a Variety of Colors. Black, gray, green, red, blue, and sky blue are among the six colors offered for the AmazonBasics packing cubes. The extensive range is appealing, and you should be able to choose at least one hue that appeals to you. If you usually like darker or muted tones, the brighter and more brilliant colors—like green and red—might seem a little tacky. However, while browsing through your pack, these more vibrant hues offer one significant advantage. We decided to go with the green version because it’s so easy to see what’s going on and where everything is.
Polyester Ripstop Material AmazonBasics Packing Cubes. The packing cubes are listed on Amazon as being made of Nylon, and however, after scrutinizing our set, the label reveals they’re 100 percent Polyester. Hopefully, this remark did not result in someone at Amazon losing their job. Please accept our heartfelt regrets if this is the case.
However, we purchased these packing cubes over two years ago, so that the fabric may have changed since then. Regardless, the content is superb and has withstood the test of time—there are only positives here. After two years of usage as a digital nomad on the road, they still appear brand new. They seem to have just been taken out of their package, which is rather astounding. The fabric is also ripstop, so it won’t become any more significant if you notice a rip or tear in the cloth.
Mesh Covering on the Top of AmazonBasics Packing Cubes. The mesh on top of the packing cubes is helpful for quickly identifying a particular item if you need to get anything specific. It will also aid with ventilation, ensuring that your garments remain fresh. The mesh, on the other hand, has several drawbacks.
These packing cubes have a significant lack of compression due to the mesh. In addition, the cubes’ form is more likely to shift and bulge in some locations. The AmazonBasics aren’t for you if you use packing cubes to cram as much stuff as possible into a compact area. If that’s your way, check out our Eagle Creek’s Pack-It Specter Cubes review.
AmazonBasics Zippered Packing Cubes. The zips on these cubes aren’t high strength (we’re sorry to say they’re not YKK), and they feel a touch cheap, although they’re metal. We’ve been blown away by how nicely they’ve handled the situation. There isn’t always time to be cautious when traveling, and these zips have been twisted, pulled, and dragged their fair number of times.
Despite this, they’ve held their ground and are still in excellent shape. There are two zips on every cube, which may seem like a bit of detail, but it makes a significant difference when cram all of your belongings into a limited space. This is a fantastic feature that is sometimes missed.
AmazonBasics Carry-On Travel Backpack with AmazonBasics Packing Cubes. The AmazonBasics packing cubes come in many different sizes and sets. The four-piece set, which contains one of each size—small, medium, big, and slim—has been put to the test. Having a choice of sizes should protect you in any situation, whether you’re carrying a daypack or the maximum permissible carry-on. We’ve discovered that by combining the various sizes, we can pack our bags in a Tetris-like pattern, maximizing the space we have—essential for one-bag travel.
AmazonBasics Small & Slim Packing Cubes. The small and slim sizes have been used a lot more than the medium and big sizes. If you want to compartmentalize (as we do), you’ll probably find the two bigger sizes a little too big—but that’s a matter of personal choice, packing technique, and, of course, the temperature and the items you’ll need. The slim, with dimensions of 14 x 5 x 2.8 inches, is perfect for smaller goods like undergarments, socks, and thinner t-shirts, while the small, with dimensions of 11 x 6.75 x 3 inches, is suitable for shorts, slacks, dresses, and so on.
AmazonBasics Large & Medium Packing Cubes. If you live in a chilly area and require thicker sweaters and woolly socks, or if you want to pack everything in one cube, the medium and large packing cubes are for you. The medium is a great size for almost things, measuring 13.75 x 9.75 x 3 inches. It’ll store about the same amount of stuff as the slim and small versions combined. The big is a HUGE packing cube, measuring 17.5 x 12.75 x 3.25 inches. This item will take up virtually all of the space in your carry-on luggage when fully loaded. We like many packing cubes for enhanced organization, but if you’re the kind that keeps everything in one giant cube, you’ll appreciate this size.
Handle AmazonBasics Packing Cubes. Each AmazonBasics packing cube includes one handle connected to the side, which we seldom use. The handle will come in useful if you ever need to carry one of these things on its own. Most of the time, you’ll use them purely as packing cubes that sit inside your pack, but if you ever need to carry one of these things on its own, the handle will come in handy. Is that clear? We’re having a good laugh over here.
If you have a toploading backpack, the handle will come in handy since it makes reaching and taking out the cubes much simpler.
When it comes to washing these packing cubes, we discovered another discrepancy between the Amazon website and the label on the cubes themselves: the website boasts that they are machine washable. In contrast, the label specifies that they are not. Even after two years of continuous travel across Asia, we’ve never needed to wash these cubes. They don’t smell at all, which is remarkable, and they’ve never gotten filthy since they’re in a bag 90% of the time. If you do get any dirt on them, they’re relatively simple to hand wash.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are packing cubes worth it?
A: Packing cubes are worth it because they make packing more manageable and more effective, but it is up to you if you think they merit buying.
Do packing cubes work better than rolling?
A: Packing cubes are a less efficient way of packing as they tend to make the clothes more wrinkled. Rolling your clothing is a more accessible and significantly better method for keeping your items wrinkle-free.
Do compression packing cubes save space?
A: The compression packing cubes do save space. Your clothes will not take up as much room in your suitcase or closet, and you can pack more than one outfit at a time.
