The following section discusses the overall design, construction quality, and functions of this monitor. As this monitor is at the bottom of the price spectrum, it will be interesting to see how it performs in some of these important areas.

Version

When it comes to sleek 27-inch gaming monitors, the VG278Q ticks a lot of boxes when it comes to raw design aesthetics. Although the VG278Q doesn’t really impress with its playfulness, on closer inspection it does offer something that many consumers are looking for.

The base has a square shape, but also provides a certain excitement thanks to the well-designed engraving and red ring, which are quite familiar from the ASUS monitors in this series. The stand is quite simple to set up, as is the back of the monitor – which does not enhance the already dark aesthetics. The 27-inch screen is framed by an 11 mm screen with the ASUS logo at the bottom of the frame.

All in all, a cute little monitor that is not suitable for all styles. This monitor can easily be used in an office or game environment.

Quality of construction

Over the years, I have always been impressed with ASUS for the quality of their monitors. They just seem to pay more attention to details, which is very important.

This makes the ASUS VG278Q monitor yet another excellent example of how ASUS gives high priority to the build quality of its monitors. This $300 gambling monitor is mainly made of plastic, but is still very solid. The support is robust and provides excellent stability for this 27-piece frame. All adjustment mechanisms seem to work well, as does the back of the panel, which makes very little beeping or noise during testing.

My only concern is that there is a slight vibration when moving the table with this particular tray. It’s not so obvious, and it would only be a problem if you were one of those super aggressive players who likes rabies.

Control cabinet cladding

Like other monitors in this price range, the ASUS VG278Q features a 3H anti-reflective coating in a matte finish. This specific type of panel coating is extremely effective in attenuating the effects of direct light. I had no problem playing on this screen in broad daylight when the sunlight wasn’t a real threat to my playing experience.

Wheels

The edges of the ASUS VG278Q are clearly visible, but do not affect gameplay. There is little difference in frame sizes, but the lower frame (which carries the ASUS logo) is slightly larger. The upper and side edges measure 11 mm, while the lower edge offers a slightly greater depth of 14 mm.

Position

The mode is probably one of my favorite features with this monitor. It is virtually flawless in terms of functionality and design and offers height adjustment, tilt, swivel and rotation. The base of the stand has a large square surface that provides excellent stability no matter what position you want to use the stand in.

In terms of physical adjustment, the stand offers a height adjustment of 130 mm, which is more than most at this price level. The ASUS VG278Q also has 5 degrees forward tilt, 33 degrees backward tilt, and 180 degrees pan and rotation to meet the needs of a wider range of users, including twitch streamers and social professionals.

Finally, halfway through the stand, the user can run all free cables through a small recess in the middle of the stand itself. It can be covered with a plastic sleeve when it is ready and – when used correctly – looks very neat.

Inputs

All inputs are located on the back of the monitor with the cables vertically mounted. The VG278Q has 1 x HDMI 1.4, 1 x DisplayPort 1.2, an audio input and a power connector.

Although the entrances are directly behind a fairly large grandstand, they are still very accessible. The user can easily rotate the monitor and has much easier access to the input.

MTO

The OSD on ASUS monitors always impresses me. VG278Q is no different. It offers easy navigation and a number of interesting features that other monitors in this price range simply do not offer.

The menu button has a mini-joystick for easy navigation through the various menus. The user can simply press the joystick to access the menus. To navigate through the menus, you need to move the joystick in the right direction – all for beginners.

ASUS has equipped this monitor with a number of gaming features, including presets for game colors such as : Scene mode, racing mode, movie mode, RTS/RPG mode, FPS mode, sRGB mode and MOBA mode. You can easily change these presets in the menu to find the one best suited to your specific needs.

Users can also change the blue backlight, colour, image and sound, all of which can be stored on the monitor itself via three special favourite profiles.

Under the menu joystick we find an undo button, a game plus button (with which we can add a crosshair, timer, FPS counter and display orientation) and a visual game button to quickly switch between presets.

Overall, the OSD is a big plus with this monitor.
