There’s more to consider than meets the eye when selecting a case for your new PC setup. If you’re new to PC construction, there’s a lot to learn, and this part should help you out a lot.

Form Factor Of Cases And Motherboards

Because big motherboards cannot physically fit into more minor cases, the form factor of your motherboard is the first item you should consider when purchasing a case. ATX, Micro-ATX, and Mini-ITX are the three most common form factors. However, there are several others employed in today’s computers.

An E-ATX or ATX motherboard, for example, will not fit inside a Micro-ATX or Mini-ITX case. Smaller form factor motherboards are occasionally supported with more significant issues, but not always, so verify the specs.

Smaller casings have less space for components and, as a result, fewer features. This isn’t an issue if you’re a minimalist. Large containers, on the other hand, are perfect for putting together high-end builds by hobbyists.

There are three main kinds of computer cases (although there are more), each of which is compatible with various motherboards:

  • Full-tower cases are the biggest and can accommodate ATX, Micro-ATX, Mini-ITX, and, in most instances, E-ATX motherboards.
  • Mid-tower cases are the most common, and they can accommodate motherboards up to ATX size.
  • Mini-tower cases forego the more giant ATX boards, although Micro-ATX and Mini-ITX boards may still be used.

Water Cooling and Airflow

As many of you are aware, PC components generate a lot of heat. Members are meant to work at high temperatures without being destroyed, but if their temperature increases too high for too long, they will degrade faster over time.

Your case fans will be helpful in this situation. If your cooling system is correctly designed, your case fans will manage the interior temperature and push hot air out while drawing in cooler air.


The number of fans you need depends on the design of your case and the quantity of airflow your system requires. As previously said, I’d advocate adopting a push/pull setup, in which some of your fans pull cold air into the case while the others expel heated air from the back. Your components will be exposed to a continual stream of cold air in this setup, maintaining your system and features at a consistent temperature.

Furthermore, if generic fans aren’t cutting it and you’re running hotter than usual, you may always add a water-cooling system to your PC. These may be relatively complex, requiring additional internal space for loop routing. On the other hand, total tower PC cases come in helpful in this situation.

Expansion Slots And Drive Bays

In general, cases come with three types of drive bays, each with its unique set of functions:

  • SSDs are often installed in 2.5-inch bays (solid-state drives)
  • Standard mechanical hard drives are installed in 3.5-inch bays.
  • Optical drives are installed in 5.25-inch bays (aka DVD or BluRay readers).

However, as physical disks become less common, several manufacturers have begun to phase out 5.25-inch optical drive slots.

Management of Cables

Total tower cases often have more wires than more minor cases due to more fans, controllers, RGB setups, and additional front I/O choices. Regardless of the situation, you’ll need to do something with those cords rather than letting them pile up in a tangled mess.

Most cases have lots of Management of Cables options pre-installed, such as grommet holes in the motherboard panel or a little indented groove for the cables to sit in. It is unlikely you will have any issues with an entire tower case regarding the Management of Cables. They are usually quite expensive, which is factored into most designs quite effectively.

Theatrical Performance

Multiple fans may be mounted in these huge enclosures, which can soon become loud. Nobody likes to hear an overworked fan’s constant drone in the background, do they?
