Over the years, the office chair has been a truly amazing piece of technology. However, the variety of styles and materials used to make office chairs are pretty astounding. You could buy an office chair in the past, and it would work just fine for a few years. However, with the advent of new manufacturing techniques, the market is now flooded with a dizzying array of different options. Some chairs are made from synthetics, while others are made from metals or composite materials. Some are made with foam padding, while others are comprised of cloth. These materials and styles have their pros and cons, making it difficult to choose the best chair for your office space.

Preparation of materials and tools

This is what we need:

  • Sewing needle, thread, and cord
  • Scissors
  • Steam iron
  • Pointed nose pliers
  • Staple remover
  • Nail gun with 1 pin
  • Overlock machine
  • Loosening of seal
  • Sewing machine
  • Air gun with staples

And since we will be working with staples, don’t forget to wear glasses or other eye protection. Wear protective gloves.

Piece by piece, cut out.

Maybe the whole project can be done in one day. But if you’re new to home improvement, it can seem like a daunting task. Therefore, we recommend dividing the project into three parts: the top, the back, and the seat. Then, you can play one game per day. It may be more practical for others to do some of the work each weekend if they work during the week. It is also advisable to do it piece by piece as you will need to take the pieces apart, sew a new fabric, and put them back together. In this way, this method ensures that you have enough energy and enthusiasm for each game.

Session part

The first step is to remove the seat. First of all, we decided to start with the headquarters. However, you can start at the top or bottom if you prefer.

  • Turn the seat to one side and check how the seat is attached to the seat. You will see a few screws and a lever, which can be confusing at first. Next, check how many screws connect the seat to the other parts of the chair and the armrest, and start unscrewing them.
  • Remove the seat and place it on the work surface. Put all the screws aside, so you don’t lose them. Then we have to put everything in place.
  • If you check the cushion’s fabric, it is usually attached to the base of the seat with screws or staples. So check the circumference of the seat. In addition to the staples, you will notice a black cord ribbon along the edge of the fabric. It also helped bring the company together. Put it aside because you may still need it.
  •  Start with the staple remover to remove all the staples that connect the fabric to the seat. Remember the black cable we talked about earlier? Before removing the clips, tie a knot at the end of each cord, so it doesn’t get lost in the tape.
  • Disconnect the cable from the fabric. It can be a little complicated. A stripper can be used to loosen the cord. If you have successfully removed it, set it aside.
  • Cut out the pattern. Take brown wrapping paper or some other paper and make a pattern for the back and the top. You can use old fabric to draw a pattern. In some cases, the old fabric may be overstretched. So it can be bigger than the circumference of the black cord. If this happens to you, just cut out the new fabric and make sure it matches the outline of the black band.
  • Use the steam iron to remove shrinkage and wrinkles from the new fabric.
  • Sew the ribbon to the new fabric. Remember that black cord we had earlier? Now it needs to be sewn onto the new fabric. Of course, you can always buy a new one, but why not reuse what you can?
  • So first, tape around the perimeter of the new fabric. Make sure the belt does not shrink. Therefore, it must first be straightened by pulling firmly on it with the hands. Next, sew the ribbon in place with a quarter-inch seam allowance. And be careful not to sew on the black cord. Sew around the perimeter once you have sewn the ribbon with the cord in.
  • You must now apply the new fabric to the seat. Insert and stretch it so that the fabric is evenly distributed.
  • Once the fabric is evenly distributed, use a stapler to attach it to the bottom of the seat. Don’t forget to wear goggles and a mask because we will be working with a stapler. Next, tie the cords where they cross in a zig-zag pattern. This ensures a good fit.
  • Attach the backrest to the base of the chair.

Control box component

If the panel is upholstered, you can also reupholster it with the same fabric. You can also be creative and use a different color or pattern! And some office chairs have a molded plastic top instead. So instead of reupholstering it, you can paint it with spray paint, especially if it already has a lot of scratches. This method uses a flexible panel.

  • Detach the plate from the backrest. It’s stuck with the pins, so use a pair of pliers to remove them.
  • For this part, we decided not to remove the old fabric. So if you turn the backrest over, you will notice that the panel does not have a pleated fabric like the seat. But there is always a cord to hold the fabric in place. So we also need to sew the cord to our new fabric.
  • Make a pattern or template. Since we’re not removing the old fabric, we’ll lay the panel on the back of the fabric and cut it out around the perimeter. Again, leave room for a fee. You should be able to wrap the fabric around your back.
  • Circle the fabric you just cut out. Then run the cable through it. You can use a blunt needle to guide the cord to the sewing thread.
  • Do not stretch the fabric around the perimeter of the panel.

Detail of file

  • The rear seat is often connected to the bottom of the car by a metal frame. You’ll find screws. Remove them with a screwdriver.
  • We all decided not to remove the old fabric to save time. So we made a model with paper.
  • Place the fabric on the left side of the plate. Cut along the back perimeter, leaving a few inches of the seam allowance. Cut the fabric.
  • Place the new fabric on the work surface. Then lay the backing on top of the fabric you just cut. Now make sure the fabric is stretched evenly. It also helps get rid of wrinkles and creases.
  • Sew the edges, not forgetting to add the cord. Then, you can use a blunt needle to thread the cord through the overlock threads easily.
  • Pull the fabric tight.
  • Baste the fabric around the circumference of the back.

Backrest and panel connection

  • The back and panel are often nailed together. So find a pin and pin your nails.
  • It is also helpful to mark the places where the fabric is pinned. This makes the work easier.

Tips

  1. If you have a more complicated office chair, it’s good to take a picture of it before you take it apart. This makes it easier for you to assemble the chair.
  2. Not all chairs are connected in the same way. So you have to look for screws, nails, and bolts. They are the ones that connect the chair to the other parts. So, again, these are devices that must be removed to work on any part of the chair.
  3. You can remove the old fabric. However, if you want to save time, you can roll the new fabric over the old fabric. However, if the old fabric has an unpleasant smell, it is best to remove it first.
