This is an excellent alternative to expensive bottles for those who are always on the go. The tumbler keeps cold drinks hot for 24 hours and warm beverages cool for 12 hours. This bottle also has no plastic parts that can leech into your glass or impact our planet.

The ability to consume your favorite beverage conveniently adds a layer of enjoyment to the cold, refreshing sensation you receive from the drink. What if you had a strawberry milkshake with a swirly straw? You can count us in. The good news is that some insulated bottles now have a built-in straw.

One such example is Klean Kanteen’s Insulated TKWide 16 oz. Apart from being an insulated bottle, the TKWide’s top incorporates a straw into a twist closure, allowing you to consume your beverage without having to tilt the bottle. The cap design is intriguing, but we need to see how the TKWide works. Let’s check how well the TKWide holds your drink without further ado.

Aesthetics & Materials

The TKWide is made of stainless steel, much like other insulated bottles. However, the stainless steel is only visible from the exterior at the bottom and on the handle. Most of the TKWide’s outside is powder-coated, giving it an excellent gripping feel that’s simple to grasp. The downside is that this powder coating is prone to scratches and scuffs. Our sample has a bright color (Blue Tint) that conceals the scuffs effectively, but if you look closely enough, you may see them.

Klean Kanteen Insulated TKWide 16 oz LogoThe TKWide is available in three colors at the time of writing: Shale Black, Blue Tint, and Purple Potion. We can’t say how the other two colors will handle scratches and flaws, but we can say that our brightly colored sample performed well. Each hue in the TKWide’s style is given a tidy two-tone effect. Purple Potion is accented with black, Blue Tint with light beige, and Shale Black with exposed stainless steel at the bottom. Only two branding pieces are used: one towards the bottom and one on the cap.

In addition to powder coating and stainless steel, silicone is used in the TKWide. A built-in pop-up straw is hidden under the twist cap. Throughout the testing time, we enjoyed the TKWide’s secret trick.

But, before we get to the sippy straw and its workings, the TKWide has several other fascinating design decisions. The way the cap threads into the main body is one of them. When you open the TKWide’s cap, you’ll see that the threading is internal rather than exterior, like on most plastic water or drink bottles. The advantage of using an interior thread design is that you won’t notice the thread if you drink straight from the bottle. Klein Kanteen, on the other hand, took a step farther with the TKWide.

Klean Kanteen Insulated TKWide 16 oz InsideKlean Kanteen employs bead-like protrusions instead of a typical thread pattern with a strip helix. It has the same effect as a strip, but according to Klean Kanteen, it also makes a superior seal for more excellent thermal performance. We can’t tell if its design helps your drink remain colder or hotter for longer, but it was the least successful in our collection of insulated bottles in this respect.

Despite being in last place in terms of thermal performance, the TKWide takes us through our typical workday with ease. Our cold water stayed at a temperature that we were happy to label “cold,” which was true even when we used it to make coffee. The TKWide isn’t the greatest in terms of performance, but it gets the job done.

Klean Kanteen Insulated TKWide 16 oz ComparisonUnfortunately, because of the TKWide’s limited capacity compared to its size, we went through our regular full of water quicker than we would with a similar bottle. The 16-ounce TKWide, for example, is about the same size as an 18-ounce YETI Rambler or Hydro Flask but has two ounces less capacity. As a result, we were consuming refills at a rate that caused our drink to lose its original warmth.

The TKWide’s hat is when it starts to show off its qualities truly. The stainless steel handle is the first notable feature here; it folds down to either side when not in use, out of the way—having the handle not set in place or projecting shaves off an additional inch or two. That may not seem like much, but it might be the difference between being able to bring an extra sandwich to work or not.

Klean Kanteen Insulated TKWide 16 oz Carabiner BagIt may use Klean Kanteen TKWide Insulated 16 oz | The bottle’s handle to secure it to a carabiner. The built-in straw rises as you twist the top open. As previously said, the section from which you drink is silicone. Unfortunately, the straw became trapped inside the cap throughout the testing period. We may remove it with our fingers, but this is neither hygienic nor practical. This little problem was resolved when we cleaned and reassembled the lid, a simple process that we’ll go through later.

A metal straw is used to expand the straw under the cap. This eliminates the need to tip the bottle upwards while drinking cold liquids. It’s worth mentioning that Klean Kanteen does not advocate sipping hot liquids via the metal straw. Scalding beverages aren’t normally drunk using a straw, and very hot liquids may harm it.

Klean Kanteen Insulated TKWide 16 oz DisassembledKlean Kanteen TKWide Insulated 16 oz | Once the lock piece is removed, the cap disassembles simply. The TKWide’s cap may be easily disassembled for cleaning. Simply remove the lock piece from the side by undoing the cap. The uppermost component of the cap (the part that twists and conceals the silicone straw) may then be taken off after this piece has been removed. It’s as simple as pulling the metal straw away from the silicone section to remove it.

The majority of the cap is now exposed and ready for a thorough cleaning. Although the silicone piece of the straw is theoretically detachable, we were unable to do so since it is glued so securely. You may clean it while it’s connected, but pay extra care to the outside edges to avoid forming filth around it.

During our testing of the cap, we noted how nicely the straw seals. There was a significant quantity of liquid trapped within the metal straw when we removed the cap with the twist cap closed (i.e., with the silicone straw tucked away). Of course, part of the liquid slowly drops down, so it’s not exactly an airtight vacuum seal, but we’re delighted to see that the twist cap produces such a tight seal since it means we won’t have to worry about leaks.

Klean Kanteen Insulated TKWide 16 oz with BrushKlean Kanteen Insulated TKWide 16 oz | Cleaning the Klean Kanteen Insulated TKWide 16 oz is simple with a regular cleaning brush. The TKWide operates well as an insulated bottle, keeping our beverages at a comfortable temperature throughout the day, but the TKWide’s modest capacity and the pace at which we empty it may have something to do with that. The well-designed cap, on the other hand, is the show’s star, making sipping from the TKWide a breeze. Aside from the difficult-to-remove silicone straw, the cap is easy to use and gives the advantage of straw without being in the way when not in use.
