The Western Rise Evolution Pant is one of the best-selling hiking pants on Amazon. It’s made with 100% polyester, making it super wrinkle-resistant and comfortable to wear in hot climates like Arizona or California. Experts say these are versatile enough for high activity use while still looking good during casual days at work.
The Western Rise Evolution Pant is best described as “fine.” These trousers, billed as the Ultimate Travel Pant and claiming a slew of characteristics, have some excellent features but aren’t as great as they seem.
Features, Fabric, and Fit
The Western Rise Evolution Pants have a look that is halfway between chinos and black wash jeans. If you choose one of the lighter colors, you’ll get more of the chino effect, while the darker colorways trend more toward the latter. We’ll let you guess which one we like.
If you guessed the darker colors, you’d get 200 points. Yes, we’ve been testing the Charcoal, but these trousers are also available in Navy, Khaki, Olive, Blue Grey, and Shadow in a genuine Pack Hacker manner. The Charcoal is our favorite, particularly with the black hardware that adds to the trousers’ overall elegance.
We, on the other hand, aren’t fans of the outfit.
Fit is, of course, a subjective term. Everyone has their style, and everybody is different, so what looks well on one person may look much better on another. As a result, the Western Rise Evolution Pants feature a straight leg that does not closely follow your body’s contours. As a result, it may seem a bit baggy. We aren’t talking about parachute pants here, but they are baggy.
You may also need to roll up the sleeves if you aren’t very tall.
Nylon Supplex® fabric, a combination of nylon and elastane, is used to make the pants. The elastane is responsible for the pants’ stretchiness (which we’ll go over in more detail in a minute), while the nylon aids in durability and abrasion resistance. Western Rise now advertises that their nylon isn’t just any old nylon. The fabric is made of Supplex® nylon (thus the name Supplex®).
Let’s take a look at how Supplex® nylon came to be. 1985 is the year. DuPont is the location. The issue is: how can we make nylon feel like cotton while keeping its durability and adding water resistance simply for fun?
DuPont scientists labored over this issue for hours in the science lab, dressed in what we can only imagine was the finest of 1980s fashion.
Okay, we’re not going to go quite that far. All you need to know is that Supplex® nylon, which Invista currently owns, is ultra-soft, water-resistant, breathable, and long-lasting. Western Rise claims to source its fabric from a bluesign® certified mill in Sweden, which we think is a big bonus.
Not as much of a benefit? The fact that it’s a swishy fabric. That isn’t a deal-breaker for us, but we know some people despise swishy pants, so we wanted to ensure we included that.
A DWR coating is applied to the fabric for added water and stain resistance. This has proven to be handy when testing a floppy water bottle and simply going about our daily lives. It’s fantastic to be able to wipe the water off our trousers and continue on our journey. Nobody likes to be seen in a pair of damp pants, right?
Furthermore, since this coating repels smells and stains, you won’t need to wash these trousers as often. Great for anybody who despises doing laundry (so everyone?). However, since DWR coatings fade with time, we anticipate that this stain/water resistance will diminish (although remember, the fabric is already a bit water-resistant). Ensure you follow the maintenance recommendations carefully to extend the life of the DWR coating.
This takes us to the pants’ stretchiness (I warned you we’d bring it up again). These trousers have a lot of stretches. They only extend in two directions rather than four, but this hasn’t been a problem. They also feature a 3″ gusset, which allows you to move more freely. Granted, we haven’t tried a down dog while wearing these, so your results may vary if you’re a yoga-at-the-terminal type of person. Nonetheless, the stretch has been ideal for wilderness excursions and city treks.
These men include two extra, travel-oriented pockets and four regular trousers pockets (two on the front and two on the back). The “media” compartment is intended for your phone and is slipped inside the front right pocket. Most devices will fit within an iPhone 11 Pro Max with a thin cover. You may, however, utilize it for other purposes if you want. For example, you may have quick cash, a bus ticket, or magical crystals…whatever you choose.
A zippered security pocket is placed into the rear right pocket as the second special compartment. It has enough space for a passport, a wallet, and some cash. Best of all, it’s carefully concealed, so it’s safe.
These trousers are also very lightweight and packable, rounding out the characteristics. We mean more packable than your typical pair of trousers when we say packable. They take up approximately the same amount of space when rolled as a rolled t-shirt, which isn’t terrible for a pair of trousers.
These trousers are “anti-wrinkle,” according to Western Rise. However, we haven’t found this to be the case. They’re just as wrinkled as trousers that don’t claim to be “anti-wrinkle.”
Last but not least, these trousers are not designed for chilly weather. We put them to the test in three seasons, and you’ll feel the difference on your legs when it’s freezing.
Testing & Durability
We’ve been using the Western Rise Evolution Pant for a few months in Detroit, Michigan, across three seasons and have taken it on many vacations. These trousers have been worn a lot over the years, and you can tell. The waistline is somewhat stretched out, and many loose threads run through the inseam, waistband, cuffs, and pockets. The black color has also faded, which isn’t unusual with black clothes, but it’s still noticeable. Of course, this isn’t the end of the world, but it’s also not ideal for a high-quality pair of trousers.
We generally appreciate certain aspects of the Western Rise Evolution Pant while disliking others. As we said at the study’s outset, this qualifies them as acceptable.
