The Ultra Light Down Jacket from Uniqlo is an updated version of the popular Cold-Weather model. This lighter-weight jacket offers a warmer alternative with some limitations, making it more suitable for use in milder weather.

The Ultra Light Down Jacket from Uniqlo is the subject of this review. So, where have you been if you haven’t heard about Uniqlo? It’s a worldwide Japanese apparel retailer that sells a broad selection of items at low costs. We’ve tried a few of their apparel and travel-related things, and we’re generally delighted with the quality, especially considering their low prices.

Just a heads up: we’ve been testing the women’s version, but there is also a men’s version. There are no distinctions between the two, and all of the material in this evaluation may be used for either.

A lightweight jacket is, in our view, one of the most significant travel purchases you can make. If you choose correctly, you may use one of them as a top layer, a mid-layer under a rain jacket, or even a cushion when compressed. In addition, these coats are often ultralight (thus the name) and take up very little space, making them a must-have for one-bag travel.

So, can this jacket compete with the more expensive options we’ve examined, such as the Montbell Plasma 1000 and the Patagonia Micro Puff? Let’s see what we can find out!

Aesthetics & Materials

This jacket, in our view, looks fantastic. It can be dressed up or down to match practically any setting, so it gets a huge thumbs up for utility and adaptability.

This jacket comes in a wide range of color options. Green was chosen since we’ve discovered that darker hues are safer to travel with. Black is the safest option, but occasionally you need a splash of color!

There isn’t any when it comes to external branding! However, Uniqlo puts this on all of their items, which is unusual. We believe it adds aesthetic value and is a welcome difference (unless you’re a fashion-forward enthusiast who prefers to wear a logo).

Moving on to the materials, this jacket’s stuffing is a combination of genuine and synthetic down. If you didn’t know, down is a controversial substance since it’s generally connected with the cruel treatment of birds. As a result, when we go shopping for coats, we constantly search for genuine down that has been responsibly procured.

On this occasion, we performed some investigation and discovered Uniqlo’s remark on the subject;

“UNIQLO does not source down from farms where live-plucking is practiced. However, by 2020, we want to employ traceable down and feathers certified by the Responsible Down Standard (RDS).”

The good news is that Uniqlo does not source from live-plucking, which is a beautiful start; nevertheless, they do not presently use certified down and feathers. Uniqlo is a little hazy on the subject of the facts.

The only information we have is that the stuffing is 90% down and 10% feathers. We don’t know whether it’s goose or duck down (or both), but we know it’s been blended with synthetic down somewhere. (Which is also not made abundantly evident on the page.)

If you’re seeking a more ethical choice or a ‘guilt-free’ purchase, we offer the Patagonia Nano Puff, which is made entirely of synthetic down.

The materials used for the jacket’s shell are a little more basic. This coat’s shell and inner are composed entirely of nylon, which is lightweight, robust, and abrasion-resistant. DWR—a waterproof, breathable coating—is then applied to the nylon for extra weather protection.

This jacket’s zips are all YKK, which we appreciate. The main zipper is a YKK #3, and the pockets have YKK #2 zippers that are really tiny! Because YKK zippers are sturdy and long-lasting, you can trust this jacket to keep up with you on your trips.

Features and Advantages

One of the finest aspects of this jacket is how light it is, making it ideal for one-bag travel (and just travel in general). It’s the same weight as the Patagonia Micro Puff for ladies, weighing in at just seven ounces. To put it another way, that’s roughly the same weight as eight doughnuts. It took us a long to come up with the proper comparison, but we think we’ve got it. The doughnuts were very wonderful.

The Uniqlo Ultra Light Down Jacket is compressed.

Uniqlo’s lightweight down jacket is also compressible, making it ideal for one-bag travel. When you’re living out of a backpack for months—or years—size and weight are important considerations. This jacket succeeds in all areas, taking up little space and weight while yet offering enough of warmth when worn. And we adore it for it.

The jacket comes with a compression bag that may be used to compress the jacket, as the name implies. This bag compresses the jacket enough, but we believe it might be compacted much more. Inside the bag, there’s still space. We’ve heard that compressing the jacket too much might lead to durability difficulties and reduce the jacket’s warmth, so that could be why they went this way. However, we’ve seen other down coats that compress even more than this one, so we can’t say for sure.

The Uniqlo Ultra Light Down Jacket is uncompressed.

We’re not down gurus, but we can tell you that if you have a compressible down jacket, you won’t want to keep it compressed for lengthy periods of time. Because this will have an effect on the down as the jacket ages, it’s best to keep it uncompressed in your closet on a hook or hanger.

However, as compared to a standard jacket, it still saves a lot of space. Also, although we appreciate that this has been addressed, this pouch can be fastened to the inside of the jacket by a loop—and although we appreciate that this has been considered, it isn’t a permanent fix, so it may still go lost on the road if you’re not cautious.

Uniqlo Ultra Light Down Jacket PocketsPockets on Uniqlo’s Ultra Light Down Jacket

Now for one of our favorite features, the pockets! THERE ARE POCKETS ON THIS JACKET! Yes, you read it correctly. This is especially useful for the women’s version, since functional pockets are scarce in women’s attire. The jacket’s two deep pockets on each side are large enough to hold your phone, passport, and keys. You won’t have to worry about anything falling out since they’re zipped.

We discovered that this jacket has a remarkable warmth-to-weight ratio, with the neck and elasticated cuffs assisting in heat retention. Despite its low weight, it performs an excellent job of keeping you warm without making you feel heavy. It’s so light that you practically forget you’re wearing it most of the time!

Testing & Durability

For over two months, we’ve been putting the Uniqlo Women’s Ultra Light Down Jacket through its paces in both the harsh English winter and the milder winter environment of Porto, Portugal.

We’re pleased to informyou  you that this item still seems fresh new. The jacket is holding up nicely, but keep in mind that although we don’t anticipate any difficulties with durability, lightweight coats aren’t extremely robust, so rips are possible. If this happens, we’ll keep a watch on it and update our consumption timetable below.

We were blown away by the jacket’s adaptability. It was simple to adjust to various temperatures, which means it may be your only jacket for lengthy one-bag travel. This item may be used as a mid-layer with an outer shell on top in colder locations. The jacket may then be used as a top layer in somewhat warmer areas for those chilly mornings or nights.

We’ve found that the jacket will seem crumpled and wrinkly when initially decompressed. But don’t worry; this will fade quickly, and you’ll be looking brand new in no time.

This jacket also works well as a windbreaker and, although not waterproof, can withstand light rain. However, if you’re going someplace with a lot of rain, throwing a rain shell over the top is straightforward.

This is a terrific daily jacket to wear, mainly when the weather is a little cool. It’s been our go-to jacket every time we leave the house, whether we’re wearing it or packing it away in our daypack.
