Whether you’re a fan of hiking, backpacking, kayaking, or just carrying your gear comfortably on long weekend trips, Fjallraven Ulvo Hip Pack Medium is a backpack designed for people who live their life outdoors. We have all had to deal with heavy and bulky packs before – but not this one! From its lightweight materials to reengineered features like a front-loading system and padded shoulder straps, it weighs only 2 pounds. If you are looking for a backpack that will make your backside feel great, then the Fjallraven Ulvo Hip Pack Medium is worth checking out. This pack has many features to make it comfortable and perfect for everything from school to outdoor adventures.

We’ve put a lot of Fjallraven gear through its paces here at Pack Hacker. And, since this Swedish business produces high-quality, long-lasting items that are useful in daily life and on the road, we’re always eager to see what they offer.

Something else that we’re constantly looking forward to getting our hands-on? Packs around the waist (also called fanny packs, hip packs, etc.). These handy bags are ideal for carrying your needs while out and about.

Fjallraven Ulvo Hip Pack MediumThe Fjallraven Ulvo Hip Pack is here to help. We’ve been thrilled to test this item since it’s from Fjallraven, and it’s a hip pack. We have a lot to say after two weeks of doing exactly that.

Before we get started, we should point you that the Ulvo Hip Pack comes in medium and large sizes. We’ve been trying the medium, which this review will be about, although the big is comparable. Only two liters greater capacity, a little better interior organization, and compression/lash straps are included.

Aesthetics & Materials

Although beauty is in the eye of the beholder, we like the austere mood of this waist pack. It manages to be urban and outdoorsy, old-school and contemporary, severe and humorous all at the same time. The traditional red arctic fox emblem on the logo tag, the historical font used to write Fjallraven, and the oblong form of the waist pack are all things we like. (It’s worth noting that the logo tag is also reflective.)

The Medium Ulvo Hip Pack, according to Fjallraven, has a capacity of two liters. Because there is currently no worldwide standard for waist pack capacity, litter size varies from company to business. This one skews toward being more extensive than what we anticipate from a 2L size, based on our expertise evaluating about 1.2 billion or hundreds of waist packs and sling bags. It’s not a positive or a negative, but it’s worth noting.

It comes in seven colors at the time of this review. Of course, since this is a Fjallraven product, all of these hues are a bit more earthy and less flashy. We’ve been putting Mountain Blue to the test, which seems to be pretty refined.

Fjallraven Ulvo Hip Pack Medium Exterior MaterialBergshell, Fjallraven’s newest fabric, is a 400D nylon composed of air-textured and regular filament yarn and is used to make this waist pack. If you want to understand more about this fabric, check out our Fjallraven Ulvo 23 Backpack review, where we go over every detail.

We’ll simply say that Bergshell is smooth, durable, and water-resistant for the sake of this assessment. In addition, the Bergshell does not take up lint or hair, unlike a variety of Fjallraven goods made of the brand’s famous G-1000 fabric. That’s fantastic!

Fjallraven Ulvo Hip Pack Medium ZippersThe zippers are from YKK, a well-known brand. They’re not water-resistant in and of themselves, but they’re covered with Bergshell fabric flaps, so you’ll be sheltered from most bad weather. The seams are also water-resistant, contributing to the overall water-resistance of the pack.

It’s also worth noting that the Ulvo Hip Pack isn’t made of leather. While we’re not in the business of telling you what a pack doesn’t have, we thought it worth mentioning since Fjallraven is renowned for using leather accents on many of its goods.

Components from Outside

Unsurprisingly, we’ll start with the Fjallraven Ulvo Hip Pack’s lone external component: the strap. It’s the ideal thickness for a waist pack of this size, providing a comfortable sling bag and waist pack carry. For the uninitiated, a sling is worn over your chest or back, while a waist pack is wrapped around your waist (appropriate names, right?).

We tried this bag in three different ways and found it to be excellent in all of them, which isn’t something you can say too frequently. It also works for both righties and lefties and fits various body shapes.

The strap is (of course) adjustable and comes with an elastic keeper, which we always enjoy since hanging straps are the worst. There are a few worse things—flimsy zippers, gear that isn’t available in black, individuals who tell us we use the term “sleek” too much—but there aren’t many.

The Waist Pack Inside

This gadget has two pockets, which is understandable given its size. The first is a security pocket with a zipper that sits against your chest, back, or waist while you’re wearing it, making it impossible for pickpockets to access. As a result, it’s ideal for storing those goods you want to keep safe.

Fjallraven Ulvo Hip Pack Medium Back PocketIt’s also an excellent spot to keep minor stuff organized since the main compartment lacks strong organization, as we’ll see in a moment. We prefer storing cash and coins in this pocket, but it’s also big enough to hold a passport or a tiny wallet like the Fjallraven Kanken Card Wallet, which is sleek but not thin.

We arrived in the main compartment. Before we go inside, we should warn you that opening might be difficult. We know how to open it, so difficult isn’t the correct term. Annoying is a better description. The two zippers are challenging to work around the edges, making opening this item a chore. Not ideal if you have a food emergency or need to get to your belongings fast. Furthermore, it requires two hands to open.

You’ll be faced with what is an open area after you’ve opened it. There’s a long stretchy mesh pocket against the back, big enough for an iPhone, and that’s all there is to it. There are no additional pockets.

Fjallraven Ulvo Hip Pack Medium Main Compartment PackedThis is a touch too essential for us. We wouldn’t want too much going on since we appreciate the fact that you can throw anything inside, but we would have liked to see a few sleeves at the rear for organizing smaller items. Also, smaller objects may be lost or trapped in the edges of the bag as it is now.

With little accessory pouches, you can always take the organization into your own hands. We enjoy the white internal fabric, making it easier to view your belongings. (However, the white makes us worry that it will become soiled soon.) So far, no issues, but.)

Fjallraven Ulvo Hip Pack Medium Main Interior MaterialOverall, the Ulva Hip Pack’s 2-liter capacity allows you to carry many goods. Whatever you’d put in your pockets, plus a bit more. It’s also the perfect size for a personal item, storing all your onboard necessities, including headphones, food, and chargers.

Testing & Durability

We’ve been trying the Fjallraven Ulvo Hip Pack in the medium size in Detroit, Michigan, for over two weeks at this review. And there are no visible indications of wear or tear. Even the white inside is in excellent condition.
