If you’re looking for a neck pillow that offers the best of both worlds – comfort and support, look no further than the Trtl Travel Pillow. It’s lightweight and has plenty of cushioning, so it doesn’t overdo anything. The weight distribution is cleverly designed, so your head won’t get too heavy while trying to sleep on an airplane or in any other situation where you need extra help taking weight off your neck area. If this sounds like something you might want on your next flight, read our full review here.

You’ve probably fallen asleep on a plane, train, car, or bus and had a crick in your neck as a consequence, whether you’re a business traveler, a red-eye regular, or a transcontinental conqueror. You last want to arrive at your destination in discomfort after spending hours in transit.

While every trip to an airport convenience shop will provide a profusion of neck pillows, the selection is limited, costs are expensive, and you may not know what to look for. By trying out the Trtl Travel Cushion, a creative alternative to the typical travel pillow, we’ve done the legwork for you.

The typical travel cushion tends to force your neck or head forward from the seat a little too much, which is a frequent complaint. Depending on your body type, this may or may not be a big concern. If it’s a significant matter and you need a solution, the Trtl could be a good option.

The Trtl cushion is made of a fleece scarf-like wrap with a Velcro strip to keep it in place. You wrap it around your neck, and a plastic brace inside offers neck support, keeping your head and chin in place while you sleep. Because the cloth is thin, it adds little weight behind your head, enabling you to rest comfortably on the seat headrest. So get ready for a new life of supported, undisturbed slumber if you’re a head bobber!

The fleece fabric is light enough to be breathable yet dense enough to prevent stretching out and losing its supporting properties. Fleece is known for being soft and comfortable, protecting your head and neck from the inside bracing. The pillow’s fabric is very soft and lightweight for the amount of support it provides. Consider a light, fall-style sweater in the shape of a neck pillow! What’s not to appreciate about that?

The brace is made of a strong plastic that is flexible enough to allow some “give.” Before you have to worry about it breaking, you may flatten it within your luggage (about 50% more flat than in its usual shape). A strip of velcro with a lengthy attachment point secures the cushion in place, enabling you to alter the fit for whichever posture you want. When you need to wash the fleece, you may easily remove the brace from the fabric.

Trtl Brace Removal PouchIt takes some time and patience to become acclimated to this sort of cushion, as well as some trial and error. It took three flights and a lot of fidgeting to get the proper posture to utilize this sucker.

The best way we discovered was to place the brace on the side of your neck first. You may set it just in front of your face so that your chin rests on it, but we felt this to be unnatural. It applies a lot of pressure on your jaw, which is a strange sensation to get accustomed to.

Tightening the velcro will provide greater support, but it’s a bit of a catch-22. Do you know how it feels when you wrap a Band-Aid over your finger too tightly? It’s the same sensation around your neck. It is not a pleasant experience. It might put a strain on your jaw if it is overly tight. You should be able to find a nice medium here that provides sufficient support without strangling you; it may take a few tries.

Trtl Velcro DetailWe also discovered that, if you have one, this cushion looks great with a sweatshirt. The base of the cushion may be tucked under the collar, which helps it remain upright. It’s also a win-win since hoodies are undoubtedly one of the comfiest solutions for sleeping on an aircraft.

Trtl with HoodieGetting accustomed to this and finding your ideal configuration may be difficult no matter how you slice it. To make matters worse, adding headphones to the mix might add to the confusion. The plastic bracing of the cushion has a propensity to disturb the base of the earbud when used with standard Apple wired headphones. This should only be an issue on one ear (whatever side the brace is on), but it is inconvenient nevertheless.

Over-ear headphones aren’t an option since the brace gets in the way of one side, forcing you to listen with one ear. If you want to sleep, this is ideal (a light sleeper may benefit from an earplug in the other ear), but if you want to watch a movie, you’ll have to settle with audio in one ear.

With the exception of inflatable travel pillows, the cushion is far lighter and more compact than any other pillow we’ve encountered. We don’t really like blowing up pillows, but hey if becoming red-faced and out of breath in the airport is your thing, more power to you. Even with books, art materials, a camera, and a wallet jammed in there, the Trtl fit neatly inside the Fjallraven Kanken Mini, which says something about the size of this item.

While we enjoy the general appearance and use of this cushion, we wish there was a little connector to attach a carabiner to it. It would be practical to attach it to the outside of a travel bag. Unfortunately, it must go inside a bag or in your hands without an attachment. We like to have our hands free (hence the backpack obsession). We hope you’ll agree that the happiest sleep is pleasant one. Here’s nothing but Zzzs and grins!
