The Razer Blade 14 is a mid-range gaming laptop released in the summer of 2018. Reviews on the device are mixed, with many considering it an average product while others think it is above average and worth its price tag.

One of the most appealing features of Razer Blade laptops is their screens, which are among the best in terms of contrast and color saturation.

As the name indicates, the Razer Blade 14 boasts a 14-inch screen with a 1440p IPS display. WePC believes that 1440p is of doubtful value for gaming until you reach a screen size of roughly 17 inches and that at 14′′, 1080p provides all the visual quality you need. Because of the decrease in FPS that comes with playing games at 1440p, it’s not worth it unless you’re going to enjoy the higher resolution aesthetically, which we don’t believe 14-inch screens allow.

Is it worthwhile to invest in a 1440p gaming laptop of this size? The higher resolution will be helpful if you plan to utilize it for visual editing, color grading, graphic design, or other workstation chores. Aside from that, just viewing any TV program or video over 1080p on this computer is a better experience. To attain those more excellent FPS, one may always lower the resolution settings in-game to 1080p and then enjoy the advantages of 1440p in other applications. Unfortunately, the closest 14-inch rivals to the Razer Blade 14 are all 1440p, so you’re out of luck if you’re looking for a portable gaming laptop of this size.

The Razer Blade 14’s maximum refresh rate is 165Hz, which translates to an entire effective 165 FPS in-game — more than adequate for most gamers who prefer to play single-player games or fast-paced shooters (by contrast, the PS5 and Xbox Series X are capped at a maximum of 120Hz display output). True competitive gamers who play first-person shooters, on the other hand, should select more giant computers with faster refresh rate screens. This is also true with the Razer Blade 14’s reaction time, roughly 9ms grey-to-grey, which is more than the 6ms required for smooth transitions that non-casual twitch shooter gamers may prefer. However, the Razer Blade 14 still offers the quickest response time of any 14-inch laptop. For reasons we won’t get into here, it’s just simpler to obtain lower ms on larger panels. Therefore, the Razer Blade 14 can’t be beaten on this within its market.

The color gamut of this display, according to Razer, covers 100% of the sRGB area. We recorded a gamut coverage of 99.8 percent of the sRGB spectrum, which amounts to a gamut volume of 142.3 percent of the sRGB space – virtually 100 percent – as seen in the top picture and the one below summarizing the results of our profiling test. This implies that, in addition to serving as a gaming laptop, the display might be utilized for sRGB colorwork.

Although Adobe RGB coverage was far below 100 percent, 85.0 percent is still enough for a gaming laptop, though not sufficient for this color palette’s professional work. The DCI P3 scores were much better, with a score of 96.7 percent indicating that the Razer Blade 14 may still be used for work in this field.

The screens on the Razer Blade 14 have been “individually tuned for quality and accurate color accuracy,” according to Razer (but we calibrated it again anyway). The color accuracy out of the box was 2.81, which is barely over the 2.5 thresholds of what we consider to be a fair amount of variation. On the other hand, the white point was 7117K, the black depth was 0.1111 cd/m2, and the contrast ratio was 996.9:1, which was what you’d expect from an IPS panel.

We calibrated the display using Display CAL after testing it out of the box. The findings increased somewhat after calibration, but not much. The white point was reduced to 7029K, while the black depth was reduced to 0.1069 cd/m2. The contrast ratio increased to 1044.2:1 as the contrast improved. The average delta benefited the most, reaching 2.25, allowing it to be used for color-correct work in the sRGB space, while it is not the most accurate on the market.

Overall, although calibrating the display improves color accuracy, you should find the out-of-the-box settings quite suitable for light editing and gaming.

After calibration, we perform a panel uniformity test on all laptops, evaluating brightness and color accuracy. Again, we start with the most central place as a baseline and then examine all of the other portions of the screen (a total of 25) to see how they stack up.

Any average color fluctuation under 1.00 is generally considered desirable, as seen in the graphic below, albeit the typical customer won’t notice much of a difference below 3.00. Color editors, on the other hand, may have a better eye.

The majority of the panel displayed acceptable-good uniformity, as shown in the image above, with the right-hand side and bottom of the display displaying the worst results. It’s not uncommon for one or more of the screen’s edges to show some variance. The section with the most deviation was the right-hand middle pane, which had an average color variation of 2.62, which was noticeable even to the untrained eye but still within acceptable limits. Overall, the screen would be sufficient if you were undertaking color grading or other color-related activities, despite the possibility of variance in display uniformity. This panel uniformity is ideal for gamers. However, keep in mind that results may vary depending on the laptop.


We ran a brightness test to round out our color accuracy tests. This laptop has a maximum brightness of 365.00 cd/m2 and low brightness of 17.59 cd/m2, which is in line with Razer’s promises and a respectable range of brightness – the highest setting in particular pleased. We usually suggest raising the intelligence to 120 cd/m2 for daytime viewing, which amounts to a luminance of 40% on this laptop’s brightness settings.
