Your laptop is essentially your life when you work remotely. It’s serious business schlepping your valuable goods between coffee shop floors or even from home to the workplace. False bottoms and cushioned laptop compartments are common in backpacks, although they aren’t always guaranteed. An extra sleeve is sometimes required. If you’re looking for a new laptop sleeve and prefer eco-friendly options, the Incase Compact Sleeve with BIONIC is a good option. It’s small and light, so it won’t take up much room in your bag. It also includes a front pocket for your laptop charger, so you won’t be caught off guard if you run out of power and can’t locate it.

However, there are a few small drawbacks to this laptop sleeve. The material attracts a lot of pet hair and lint, which is worse than other laptop sleeves we’ve tested. While the front pocket seems to be a good spot for your charger, it’s a little snug and protrudes just enough from the sleeve’s thin appearance. It is available in two sizes: 13′′ and 16′′. We spent two weeks testing the 13-inch version with a 13-inch MacBook Air and have some observations.

Aesthetics & Materials

Now, let’s get down to business: what exactly is BIONIC? Let’s have a look at it in more detail. BIONIC yarn is made from recycled plastic from the ocean and coastal areas. This yarn, according to the manufacturer, is very robust and has “abrasion-resistant ripstop characteristics to safeguard your gadget.” Each sleeve is constructed from the equivalent of seven plastic water bottles, which we think is a good thing. This sleeve isn’t the only item made using BIONIC material by Incase. Commuter Backpack with BIONIC, Hipsack with BIONIC, and Accessory Organizer with—you guessed it—BIONIC are also available.

Although the material is rather soft to the touch, it has a crisp, paper-like sound to it. We also discovered that it is somewhat slick, so be cautious while removing it from your luggage with your laptop inside. The fabric’s tiny square grids provide charm while also preventing minor rips and tears from becoming bigger.

The Incase Compact Sleeve with BIONIC is available in four colors at the time of this review. We like this section of product evaluations because it allows us to discuss the creative colorway names that companies come up with. For this laptop sleeve, we have Baltic Sea (navy blue), Sand, Ocean Green, and Steel Gray. We chose the Sand color since it looks great at the beach. It’s a beautiful subdued yellow-beige, just joking.

Unbranded zippers are usually avoided since they may lead to catastrophe. We’ve tested enough gear to understand how frustrating it is when a zipper fails while you’re on the road. We were a little concerned since the zippers on this Incase sleeve aren’t branded. Fortunately, they held up and did not cause us any problems. We’ll keep a watch on them to see how long they last. It’s also easy to open because to the long zipper pulls.

This laptop sleeve has a sophisticated appearance to it, with little branding and clean lines. There is no additional branding on the bag save for Incase logos on the zipper pulls and a tiny tab on the side. We believe branding plastered all over a product are a little cheesy. This is more in line with our usual minimalist aesthetic.

Usage & Features

The slim, compact shape of this sleeve makes it ideal for travel. The Incase Compact Sleeve with BIONIC isn’t called that for nothing! Other sleeves we’ve tested, in their effort to protect your laptop, wind up simply adding additional weight to your luggage. We don’t want that, particularly when we’re traveling with just one luggage and limited room. Even if you just need anything for day-to-day carry in a tiny daypack, this sleeve will most likely fit. It offers enough cushioning to keep your laptop safe, and we’re pleased with how thin the sleeve manages to remain despite that.

Incase Compact Sleeve with BIONIC compared to the Aer Tech Folio. When compared to the Aer Tech Folio, the Incase Compact Sleeve with BIONIC seems to be very thin.

A laptop charger and cable are intended to fit in a zipped pocket on the front. Although this seems to be a wonderful idea in principle, we discovered that it just adds to the mass. The pocket is snug against the sleeve, and a normal MacBook charger protrudes noticeably. When you have a block poking out the front like it’s screaming to be let free, it detracts from the minimalist vibe and thin profile. You’re better off stashing your charger in a tech pouch or a larger pocket within your backpack. It simply looks nicer, plus the bulge may get in the way when attempting to get the sleeve out of a tight spot in your luggage. You may also go with a smaller charger, but anything that isn’t flat would protrude and seem unattractive. This pocket was mostly used for a Field Notes Notebook, which is tiny and lies flat.

Incase Compact Sleeve with BIONIC front pocketWe don’t like how the laptop charger bulges while utilizing the front pocket on the Incase Compact Sleeve with BIONIC.

While we like the subdued hues and eco-friendly fabric, we did find that it quickly collects lint, grime, and pet hair. We assumed it was only the sand hue since it’s so light, but we’ve heard complaints about other colors with the same issue. By the end of the two weeks, the sand version had become a little dusty for us. If you have a furry companion at home, keep the lint roller close by.
